TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS:Trade
The Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired goalkeeper Bryan Meredith in a trade with Inter Miami CF, the two teams announced Wednesday evening.
In exchange, Miami received Vancouver's fourth-round pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. Meredith becomes the first departure in the history of Inter Miami, who will begin play as an expansion team when the 2020 MLS regular season kicks off on Feb. 29.
A nine-year professional, Meredith spent eight combined seasons with the Seattle Sounders and San Jose Earthquakes before being selected by Miami in the 2019 MLS Expansion Draft. The 30-year-old New Jersey native is the third goalkeeper on the Whitecaps' roster this season, joining the club's 2019 Player of the Year, Maxime Crepeau, and academy product Thomas Hasal. The move also leaves Miami with three goalkeepers on their roster, with veteran and presumed No. 1 Luis Robles joined by John McCarthy and youngster Drake Callender.
"We are happy to welcome Bryan to the club,” said Whitecaps FC sporting director Axel Schuster in a team statement. “He will bring additional experience and leadership to the group both on and off the pitch.”
In his last three seasons, all with Seattle, Meredith primarily served as the club's backup. He appeared in two Open Cup games for the Sounders during that time and made 25 appearances for the club's USL Championship affiliate, the Tacoma Defiance. In total, Meredith has 50 starts in 52 professional appearances in his career.
