The Major League Soccer to St. Louis bandwagon has picked up another prominent backer, with Sporting Kansas City midfielder and St. Louis-area native Brad Davis throwing some of his weight behind the project.
It’s unlikely that the 34-year-old Davis would ever be able to suit up for a potential St. Louis MLS club. He would, however, entertain the idea of working for said franchise, telling the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Tuesday that he’s been in touch with people involved in luring MLS to St. Louis and “would definitely… be interested in” working for an MLS team in his hometown.
A longtime soccer hotbed, St. Louis emerged as a serious candidate for MLS expansion in the weeks following the NFL’s decision to relocate the Rams to Los Angeles. A group of the city’s business and sports leaders last week formed the MLS2STL Group to explore and advance the city’s candidacy for MLS expansion, and MLS commissioner Don Garber has spoken about a proposed stadium site on the city’s downtown riverfront and mentioned it as a candidate for expansion.
Davis, who moved from the Houston Dynamo to SKC this winter, said that the time is finally right for MLS to move to St. Louis, which has fallen short in several previous attempts to lure the league to town.
“This is the best case scenario, right here,” he told the Post-Dispatch. “They waited. They put in their due diligence. Now, with the Rams leaving, it leaves a void. This is a great opportunity to connect with the fan base, to get a stadium downtown. I know there are a couple of areas downtown they are going to be looking at. Without a doubt, this is going to be their time to make something happen. And I know they really want to do it right.”
