Sacramento Republic FC have been bullish in their quest to land an MLS franchise in recent weeks, and they have just taken what they hope is another step towards accomplishing that goal.
The USL Pro club announced on Wednesday that they have chosen a site for the potential construction of a stadium, selecting the Sacramento Railyards as the location. The Railyards are nestled between the River District and downtown area, and are one of the largest urban infill projects in the United States.
Republic FC's plan is to reuse the land that has previously been deemed unusable and turn it into a part of the community while also creating a livelier environment for locals. The club also intends to retain and celebrate the Railyards' historical importance.
The announcement arrived ahead of a visit to Sacramento by MLS executives to determine the city's feasibility as an expansion franchise. MLS has said it will expand to 24 clubs by the end of the decade, with New York City FC, Orlando City and Atlanta entering the league in the coming years as the 20th, 21st and 22nd franchises. Miami is expected to follow suit as the 23rd.
Sacramento started playing in USL Pro this year and currently play at Bonney Field. They have experienced great success at the gates, drawing large crowds on a consistent basis to set the league record for highest total attendance in a season back in July.
