MLS officials have met with San Diego State University to discuss the possibility of an expansion team playing at the university's new football stadium when it opens in 2022, according to a report from San Diego ABC affiliate KGTV that was first published on Monday.
The league acknowledged recent meetings with the university.
“Major League Soccer executives recently met with San Diego State University leadership to learn more about the project," a league-issued statement reads. "Beyond that meeting, we do not have an update.”
The university confirmed in a statement to KGTV it is looking for additional tenants to occupy the planned 35,000 venue that would also host Aztecs NCAA Division I FBS football.
