Report: Former Vancouver Whitecaps star Alphonso Davies linked to Real Madrid

Alphonso Davies - Bayern Munich - February 25, 2020

If you thought the hype surrounding Alphonso Davies would be dying down anytime soon, you would be mistaken.

The former Vancouver Whitecaps homegrown star and current Bayern Munich man has already been taking the Bundesliga by storm with some electric performances from his new left back spot, looking very much like one of the world's top young talents. While the Bundesliga has just gotten back underway as the first top flight league to return to action during the COVID-19 pandemic, Davies is now being floated as a transfer target to one of the world's biggest clubs, according to a Wednesday report from Spanish outlet Don Balón linking Davies to a potential move to none other than Real Madrid.

The report says that the La Liga giants are eyeing Davies as the successor to 32-year-old Marcelo, who has long been considered arguably the world's best at the position, but could be primed for a change of scenery after more than a decade at the club.

"Therefore, they're looking for a player with more offensive projection, and one that can fight for the starting spot [at left back]," the report said. "And there is a name that has risen up the list in the last few months, as he is one of the great sensations of this season: This is Alphonso Davies, the Bayern Munich player, where he arrived a little more than a year ago from Major League Soccer."

Davies, of course, got his start in MLS with the Whitecaps before he was sold to Bayern for a then-record transfer fee for the league. The way he's been playing, it would likely take an exorbitant fee to pry him from Bayern, but Real Madrid has never been shy about breaking out the checkbook. Either way, the more Davies excels, the more likely rumors like this are bound to pop up.
