Does Miami Beckham United sound like a soccer team name to you?
Well, it's not. And that's according to the David Beckham-led ownership group that's working to bring an MLS expansion team in Miami with the option that the former LA Galaxy star contractually holds.
A spokesman on Wednesday confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that the "Miami Beckham United" moniker that leaked out on social media and into English tabloids after a corporate filing with the state of Florida (someone has already locked up the domain name, too) has nothing to do with a name for a potential MLS expansion team in Miami.
"It's not an indication of the ownership group name and it's not an indication of the team name," said the group's Miami-based spokesman, who pointed out that the ownership group name is still Beckham Brand Limited. "It's not going to be used for anything public."
What is true is that Miami-Dade County commissioners will be voting on a resolution on Dec. 17 to ask Miami-Dade mayor Carlos Gimenez "to identify possible stadium sites and negotiate construction contracts with any interested private developers," TheMiami Herald reports.
"Commissioners would authorize Gimenez to 'negotiate and finalize' agreements to develop a stadium and then present the contracts to the board [of commissioners]," according to the Herald article.
"There’s a lot of work that needs to happen," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in his annual State of the League address last week. "We can’t go to Miami without the right stadium solution. David understands that. The city understands that. That’s an indisputable fact. We can’t have different rules in Miami than we have in any other city.
"We want to do as much as we can to work with David and Simon Fuller to get something done as quickly as we can."
