D.C. United took a lead over the Portland Timbers on an own goal in Week 28, but the Black-and-Red appealed for a second own goal just before halftime.
In the 38th minute, Wayne Rooney’s in-swinging corner kick went off Paul Arriola’s back at the far post and then caromed off Timbers goalkeeper Steve Clark and rolled toward the goal. Portland's Eryk Williamson cleared the ball off the line with D.C. players claiming it crossed the line for a goal.
However, referee Drew Fischer and his crew ruled the ball did NOT cross the line.
And as with all potential goal incidents, the play was checked by the Video Assistant Referee, but Fischer did not opt for a Video Review on the incident.
The officials were asked about the incident by a pool reporter after the match and said a clear error was not made utilizing the "available angles."
