After three matches postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests, the Colorado Rapids are looking to get back onto the field Saturday night when they host a struggling LA Galaxy side at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
The Rapids (5W-4L-4D) last played Sept. 23 when they defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 5-0, while the Galaxy (4W-8L-3D) suffered a fifth consecutive defeat Wednesday, losing at home to the Portland Timbers, 6-3.
This is the second meeting this season, with the Rapids winning 2-0 in Carson on Sept. 19 with Cole Bassett and Jonathan Lewis scoring a goal in each half. That snapped LA's six-match unbeaten run and started the winless streak, which is now at six.
Colorado Rapids
The regular-season game between the Rapids and LAFC, originally scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed after one new confirmed case of COVID-19 among the Rapids staff.
Wednesday's scheduled game was the third consecutive Rapids contest to be postponed. A Week 14 contest against Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 27 was postponed following confirmed positives on Sept. 24 for one Rapids player and three staff members. A Week 15 contest against Portland set for October 3 then postponed after positive tests for two more players and eight staff members. Those games have already been rescheduled, while details on the Colorado-LAFC match will be announced at a later date.
LA Galaxy
The Galaxy fell into a two-goal hole after just 23 minutes and conceded three more times in the first 18 minutes of the second half in a 6-3 home loss to the Timbers. There were some positives, including Julian Araujo's goal that cut the Galaxy's deficit in half. But the defensive deficiencies that have haunted the team throughout the season hit them hard again Wednesday night.
"We made some mistakes, some individual mistakes in the defense" Guillermo Barros Schelotto said after the match. "But if you check the goals, we were always organized. They never counter attacked and then they scored, we always kept our shape, even if you check every goal, we had more players defending then they had attacking. But we recognize that Portland has players in their national team and have good quality.”
