Sacramento Republic this week continued their push to land an MLS expansion franchise after the City of Sacramento released the Preliminary Term Sheet for a proposed soccer-specific stadium that would be built in downtown Sacramento should the club be granted entry into MLS.
The term sheet for the stadium project, which would be constructed by Sac Soccer & Entertainment Holdings (SSEH), will next be reviewed and voted on by the Sacramento City Council on Dec. 1.
Some of the more noteworthy details from the term sheet include the proposed stadium capacity (25,000 seats), the specifics of the public-private partnership (with an estimated $180 million of the $226-million project financed by SSEH) and the construction timeline seeing the facility opening its doors as early as March 2018.
“There is tremendous enthusiasm for having a Major League Soccer team in Sacramento," said Sacramento City Manager John Shirey in a statement. "The preliminary term sheet illustrates the City’s commitment to bringing an MLS team to the city and to bringing new life to the long shuttered Railyards site."
Currently, MLS has 20 teams but plans to add four more teams by the end of the decade. Three of those expansion slots will be filled by Atlanta United FC, Los Angeles FC, and Minnesota United.
