Sebastian Berhalter joined the 'Caps in February 2022 via trade from Columbus Crew in exchange for $50,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM) and up to $50,000 in conditional GAM for certain performance metrics.
The midfielder is the son of former USMNT and Chicago Fire FC head coach Gregg Berhalter.
WHITECAPS FC
'24: Berhalter continued to build on his strong 2023 season, becoming a key piece of the roster. The midfielder recorded three goals and seven assists as he started 27 of his 45 appearances across all competitions, all of which ranked as career-highs. Berhalter made his 100th appearance for the ‘Caps at LAFC on October 27 in the first match of the MLS Cup Playoffs Round One Best-Of-3 Series. For his efforts, Berhalter was awarded with the Jock McDonald Unsung Hero award, as chosen by the club’s supporter groups. He was also the recipient of the club’s Humanitarian of the Year award, always taking extra time to acknowledge young fans and making them feel special in the Vancouver community. His biggest impact off the pitch was through the club’s partnership with BC Children’s Hospital. The club conducted four visits throughout the year, and Berhalter was there each time, making a lasting impact by spending more than six hours with 40 children on the oncology floor and in the Whitecaps FC designed playroom.
'23: Berhalter enjoyed a fruitful season in 2023, as he started 16 of his 37 appearances across all competitions in his second year with the ‘Caps. The midfielder also added two goals and four assists, scoring his first professional goal against Houston Dynamo FC on May 31 and finding the back of the net once again against St. Louis CITY SC on October 4.
'22: Berhalter started 11 of his 20 appearances across all competitions in his first season with the ‘Caps but missed most of the year after suffering a right foot stress fracture in June. The midfielder started four consecutive matches for the first time in his MLS career from late March to mid-April, making starts at Los Angeles FC, against Sporting KC, against Portland Timbers and at CF Montréal.
AUSTIN FC
'21: Berhalter joined expansion side Austin FC on loan from Columbus for the 2021 season, starting five of his 18 appearances for the Verde and Black. The midfielder tallied his first MLS assist against Houston Dynamo FC on August 4, 2021.

'20: Signed as Homegrown Player on January 17, 2020. Made four starts in nine appearances.
INTERNATIONAL
Berhalter has featured for the U.S. U-16 national team.
COLLEGE
Berhalter made 16 appearances for the North Carolina Tar Heels as a freshman in 2019.
YOUTH
Berhalter played for Columbus Crew SC academy from 2014-2019, featuring for the Under-13/14, U-15/16, U-16/17 and U-18/19 sides. The midfielder made a total of 103 appearances (97 starts) and scored 11 goals for the Black & Gold. Notably, Berhalter helped Crew SC academy finish third at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-19 Tournament for the 2017-2018 season.
