Columbus (2023): The Crew acquired defender Malte Amundsen on April 25 via trade with NYCFC. Amundsen made 22 regular season appearances including 21 starts, collecting three goals and assists, alongside six post-season appearances. The Dane made his Columbus Crew debut in the U.S. Open Cup starting against Loudoun United FC (May 10). He made his official Crew debut against Orlando City (May 13), coming off the bench. The defender made headlines when he recorded goals in consecutive matches against LA Galaxy (May 17) and FC Cincinnati (May 20); those matches also marked his first starts with the club in MLS play. Amundsen started all three of the Crew’s Leagues Cup matches, including recording a goal and assist against Minnesota United in the knockout round (August 4). The defender recorded the game-winning goal for the Crew against New England (October 4), handing the Revolution their first home loss of the season. During the Black & Gold’s MLS Cup title run, Amundsen started all six playoff matches, scoring one goal from long-range in Match 3 of Round One against Atlanta United. The defender also provided the deep line-splitting assist for Midfielder Yaw Yeboah’s 37th minute game-winner, which capped an 11-pass sequence in the championship match against LAFC on Dec. 9. At the end of the season, Amundsen was awarded the Club’s Kirk Urso Heart Award. The defender was chosen as the player who best exemplified the qualities in a teammate and became “the heart” in the Black & Gold locker room.
New York City FC (2021-23): Malte Amundsen appeared in 59 matches with New York City FC, including playing a role in winning the 2021 MLS Cup with the club. Amundsen made his MLS debut against D.C. United (April 17, 2021) and made his first MLS start against Los Angeles Football Club (May 29, 2021). The Dane recorded his first MLS goal and assist in a 5-0 win over Orlando City FC (July 25, 2021). Amundsen appeared in every post-season match for New York, including starting all leading up to the championship match against Portland where he came off the bench. In 2022, the defender recorded back-to-back assists in games and appeared in all three playoff games. Amundsen was traded to the Columbus Crew on April 25, 2023 in exchange for General Allocation Money.
Vejle Boldklub (2019-21): Amundsen appeared in 53 matches for the Danish Superliga side, scoring two goals in his tenure. In the 2019-20 season, he was able to help the club into promotion after they were demoted the previous year.
Rosenborg (2018-19): In his first year of professional play, Amundsen appeared in two matches with the Danish club, even appearing in the league’s final with the club. He was sent on loan to Eintracht Braunschweig in Germany in the second division of Bundesliga, appearing in 12 matches with one goal.
