A strong, powerful, dynamic central midfielder, Leonard Owusu joined Whitecaps FC in January 2020 from Israeli Premier League side FC Ashdod with the use of Targeted Allocated Money.
A product of Dreams FC in his hometown of Accra, Owusu agreed to an MLS contract through 2022, with an option for 2023.
WHITECAPS FC
'21: After beginning the season on the sidelines from a pre-season injury, Owusu went on to display his wide range of passing and attacking drive from the middle of the park. The Ghanaian made his first start of the season on August 13 against San Jose Earthquakes and went on to start 13 of the next 16 matches in the regular season. In total, Owusu made 15 starts and 26 appearances in all competitions, including an appearance in the Canadian Championship and a start in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
'20: Owusu finished a solid first MLS season with 14 starts in 20 appearances. He landed among the top five 'Caps in several categories including passes, passing accuracy, dribbles completed, recoveries, while pitching in one assist. In addition, Owusu started the 'Caps Round of 16 matchup against Sporting KC at the MLS is Back Tournament, scoring a goal during the shootout.
ISRAEL
'18-'20:Â Owusu featured for FC Ashdod since July 2018, initially on a year-long loan from Ghanian club Dreams FC, before joining the Israeli Premier League club on a permanent transfer. He made 46 league appearances for Ashdod, as well as an additional 13 matches in Israel State Cup and Toto Cup competition.
GHANA
'15-'18:Â Owusu began his professional career in 2015 with Dreams FC in his hometown of Accra, and twice led his club to a promotion to the Ghana Premier League. In 2018, he was named the most valuable player in the Ghana League Clubs Association G8 Tournament, as he captained Dreams FC to the championship, and scoring the winner in the final. In his final season with the club, he tallied five goals and five assists in 10 matches, leading to a loan with Israeli top-flight club Ashdod.
