MLS great Aurélien Collin retires after remarkable career
Longtime MLS center back Aurelien Collin announced his retirement as a player on Thursday through a statement from former club Sporting Kansas City.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
2021 (Philadelphia): Made his first postseason start against New York City FC in the Eastern Conference Finals of the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs (Dec.5).
2020 (Philadelphia): Collin has appeared in the matchday squad 17 times.
2019 (Philadelphia): Collin has made six appearances (six starts) for the Union this season ... helped the club keep a clean sheet in his debut Philadelphia start, vs. Montreal (April 20) ... made one appearance in the Open Cup, starting the Fourth Round match at D.C. United (June 12) ... signed with the Union as a Free Agent prior to the season.
2018 (New York Red Bulls): Collin made five starts in seven matches with the Red Bulls. He appeared in his 200th career match across all competitions against New England on June 2. In the CONCACAF Champions League, he started in all four matches that he appeared in, and he appeared in two other Open Cup matches.
2017 (New York Red Bulls): The defender was re-signed by New York Red Bulls on January 4. He started in seven matches and appeared in nine in total. He also played in both matches of the CONCACAF Champions League series with Vancouver.
2016 (Orlando City SC/New York Red Bulls): Collin made 23 appearances, including 21 starts and chipped in two assists for New York after being acquired from Orlando City in April. He made his Red Bulls debut on May 6, 2016 vs. his former club, Orlando. He earned his first point as a Red Bull with an assist vs. the Union on October 23. He made two appearances for OCSC before being traded. He also made two postseason appearances, two Open Cup appearances, and four CCL appearances.
2015 (Orlando City SC): Collin scored two goals and added one assist in 28 league appearances, 27 of them starts, earning the second-most minutes played on the team with 2,407. He was named to the MLS Team of the Week on three occasions.
2014 (Sporting Kansas City): The France native scored two goals in 26 games played, 25 of them starts, and contributed to six shutouts. He was named to the MLS Team of the Week (Week 2) after scoring his first goal of the season in a 1-1 draw vs. FC Dallas on March 15. He was again named to the MLS Team of the Week (Week 7) after scoring in a 4-0 win over Montreal on April 19 . He was tabbed an MLS All-Star for the third straight season on July 19, and he started and played 45 minutes in the MLS All-Star Game on August 6 as the MLS All-Stars defeated Bayern Munich 2-1 in Portland. He also made one postseason appearance, three CCL appearances, and one Open Cup appearance.
2013 (Sporting Kansas City): Collin had a hugely successful 2013 that saw him win MLS Cup as MLS Cup MVP, as well as being named a 2013 MLS All-Star and Sporting KC's Humanitarian of the Year. In total, he appeared in 29 games (all starts) with three goals and one assist. He notched his first goal and game-winning goal of the season with a header in a 1-0 win over New York. In the playoffs, he started and played full time in all five MLS Cup Playoff matches, scoring three goals and tallying one assist during the postseason. He recorded the game-tying goal and converted the game-winning penalty kick in the MLS Cup final vs. Real Salt Lake. He also started three CCL matches and two USOC matches.
2012 (Sporting Kansas City): Collin played a total of 2,490 minutes during the 2012 MLS regular season, starting 28 games and appearing in 29 total. He scored three goals and added one assist. He scored the game-tying goal against Dallas on March 25th, the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on April 14 and the equalizer at Vancouver on April 18th. He was named to the 2012 MLS All-Star GameDay roster and was a finalist for MLS Defender of the Year. He was also named to the MLS Best XI and helped SKC win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
2011 (Sporting Kansas City): Collin joined Sporting Kansas City as a guest trialist in March before completing his signing on April 15. He earned his first start on April 23 at New England and scored his first MLS goal, a match-winner, in a 4-1 victory at Dallas. In the postseason, he opened the scoring with the first goal in the 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids in the second leg of the playoffs.
2007-2011: Prior to MLS, Collin spent time in the academies of both Sedan and Amiens in his native France, as well as with Spanish outfit RCD Mallorca. He signed his first senior deal ahead of the 2007-08 season with Scottish Premier League side Gretna FC. In 2008, Collin joined Greek club Panserraikos, followed by Welsh club Wrexham FC and then Vitoria Setubal of the Portuguese topflight.
