After making a surprise return to the playing field with the San Diego Sockers of the MASL in January, MLS and U.S. Soccer legend Landon Donovan has another decision to make.
The Sockers season ended in heartbreaking fashion over the weekend, succumbing to an overtime goal in the Western Conference finals to the Monterrey Flash. The Sockers had been on a 23-match win streak.
Donovan was noncommittal about his future, though did admit he'd love to stick with the Sockers if it works out.
“I would like to do it if they want me back if I have the opportunity, but there are a few other things going on in my life that may preclude me from doing it, so we’ll see what happens," Donovan told NBC San Diego. "I had a great experience, so much respect for the organization, fans, staff and Phil, I am appreciative of what they did, took a chance and I had a lot of fun.”
Donovan had five goals and 11 assists in eight regular-season appearances for San Diego.
The 36-year-old won six MLS Cups during his time in the league and is the namesake for the league's MVP trophy. His all-time USMNT goal tally was equaled by Clint Dempsey in 2017 and his MLS record goal tally is just one ahead of Chris Wondolowski, who figures to rewrite the record books in 2019. His assist records will stand for a while longer, though, with no one near him for club nor country.
