Fans of the Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian national team and others who follow MLS and/or Canadian soccer probably already know about Alphonso Davies' incredible story, and the talented teenager shared it with the members of FIFA on Wednesday morning in moving fashion.
Speaking in support of North America's United bid to host the 2026 World Cup, the Whitecaps' 17-year-old sensation explained how Canada welcomed him and his family with open arms as they sought refuge from Liberia's bloody civil war, an amazing journey that took him from a refugee camp in Ghana to a new life in Edmonton, and eventually to a promising career in MLS and on the international stage with Canada.
Davies' remarks can only have helped the United bid, which cruised to an emphatic victory in the vote for 2026 hosting rights and will now look to inspire future generations across Canada, Mexico and the United States. You can learn more about Davies' unique background here.
