It was only a matter of time.
Washington's two most famous European-born athletes were finally brought together on Friday night at Capital One Arena, where D.C. United forward Wayne Rooney went to watch Alex Ovechkin and the NHL's Washington Capitals.
Following a 6-3 Capitals victory over a the New Jersey Devils (no relation to Rooney's former Red Devils sides), Rooney shared a postgame chat with Ovechkin, Caps attacker Evgeny Kuznetsov and others.
Earlier this year, the man Caps fans call "The Great 8" helped his team win D.C.'s first major pro sports title in 14 years, taking the Stanley Cup after a 4-1 final series over the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
The city's previous title belonged to D.C. United, which won MLS Cup most recently in 2004. Rooney joined the Black-and-Red this summer on a three-and-a-half year deal with the aim of helping take D.C. to its fifth league crown.
