TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Re-signed
Columbus Crew SC have re-signed left back Waylon Francis ahead of the 2021 MLS season, the club announced Wednesday.
Francis, 30, appeared in a combined five regular-season and Audi MLS Cup Playoff games in 2020 as Columbus won the league title. The Costa Rican veteran was also part of the Crew SC side that made MLS Cup in 2015.
“We are pleased to re-sign Waylon for the 2021 campaign,” Columbus president & general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a release. “Waylon is a veteran in this league and is someone who has spent a lot of time in Columbus with a thorough understanding of our Club culture. We look forward to his contributions to our team as we look to continue to contend for trophies in multiple competitions.”
Francis played for Columbus from 2014-17 before returning there for the 2019 season, head coach Caleb Porter’s first with the club. He also spent 2018 with the Seattle Sounders, has seven appearances with Costa Rica’s national team and was at Herediano before coming to MLS.
Francis, who has 19 assists through 115 MLS games (98 starts), gives Columbus depth at left back alongside Milton Valenzuela. His signing brings the Black & Gold roster to 24 players as they’ll look to defend their MLS Cup victory.
