While there were plenty of spectacular goals to go around in last weekend's Major League Soccer action, it's not like defenders and goalkeepers were idle. Several made outstanding stops, and five have been nominated for the next MLS Save of the Week award.
Three of those five plays come from defenders, not goalkeepers. Houston Dynamo left back Corey Ashe slid full stretch to clear a Kamani Hill shot off the goal line, while FC Dallas center back Matt Hedges used his head to deny Steven Lenhart and the New England Revolution's A.J. Soares got back in time to stop Marco Di Vaio.
For the guys allowed to use their hands, San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch was nominated for his penalty-kick save on Fabian Castillo, while Real Salt Lake stand-in Jeff Attinella, who was way busier than he hoped to be, was nominated for his stop on Obafemi Martins.
