They may have played for opposing teams in MLS, but the ties between Mexico teammates Giovani dos Santos and Carlos Vela run deep.
After dos Santos' contract with the LA Galaxy was bought out last week, with the attacker's next destination as yet unknown, LAFC star Vela was asked about his longtime friend and teammate, and he immediately offered support.
"Obviously, I don't know the full situation but he knows, in the good times and the bad, he can count on me," Vela said in Sunday's postgame press conference following a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City, as translated by ESPN. "I will always support [him] -- I will always be there for him."
While dos Santos' departure from the Galaxy was driven by the club needing to dispense with a Designated Player, the team entering the final days of preseason with one too many per league regulations, Vela believed dos Santos will ultimately prove his old club wrong.
"I am calm because he will show what a good player he is and surely Galaxy will regret having let him go," he said.
