Save of the Week

Vancouver's Cannon still Save of the Week reigning champ

Whitecaps 'keeper Joe Cannon made a timely save to preserve a draw against D.C. United

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. But when it comes to Joe Cannon, maybe he’s already mastered everything he needs to know.

The 37-year veteran has been the lynchpin of the stingiest defense in Major League Soccer this season, with 11 saves and a spotless 0.00 goals-against average in three games for the resurgent Vancouver Whitecaps.

For testament to Cannon’s red-hot start to his 15th league in MLS, look no further than his amazing 67th-minute save off a header from D.C. United striker Hamdi Salihi last time out. That save – which helped preserve the Whitecaps’ mark as the only team in MLS to not allow a goal this season – gave Cannon the Save of the Week for the second consecutive week, and he won it going away.

Cannon received nearly 45 percent of the votes, easily topping a breakaway save from Philadelphia’s Zac MacMath on Chicago’s Dominic Oduro (19 percent) and a diving stop from Montreal’s Donovan Ricketts on the Crew’s Eddie Gaven (18 percent).
