TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS:Extensions
The Vancouver Whitecaps announced on Tuesday the club has signed Yordy Reyna to a new contract using Targeted Allocation Money, and also extended Felipe's contract to solidify their midfield core for the upcoming season.
Reyna's new contract is for the coming 2019 season, with options for 2020 and 2021. Felipe's extension runs through 2020 with an option for 2021.
Reyna, a 25-year-old attacking midfielder/forward in the prime of his career, has created the fourth-most big chances (22) in MLS since making his debut in July 2017. He finished tied for fourth last season in big chances created with 15. That put him alongside Sebastian Giovinco and Carlos Vela, and two behind leaders Miguel Almiron, Nicolas Lodeiro and Darwin Quintero.
“Yordy has shown that he has qualities that are important for our club,” Whitecaps coach Marc Dos Santos said in a statement. “He’s fast, direct, and has the ability to create chances for himself and others while playing different roles in the attack. We believe he can still become even better.”
Since joining the club, Reyna has 13 goals and 15 assists in 37 starts and 50 appearances across all competitions.
Meanwhile, Felipe led the ‘Caps in touches, chances created, total successful passes, and successful passes ending in the final third last season.
He's also proven remarkably durable, leading MLS with 210 regular season starts since his arrival in 2012, an average of 30 a season.
“For me this means a lot, because this club wants me to stay,” Felipe said in a statement. “Canada has always made my family feel at home, my son was born here, and we hope to be in Vancouver for a long time. I want to help the club make history and do something special. I’m here to win.”
