TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
Vancouver Whitecaps FC have signed 2021 MLS SuperDraft pick and Jamaican international right back Javain Brown with club options through 2024, the club announced Wednesday.
Brown was Vancouver’s second pick (No. 23 overall in the first round) after he featured for the University of South Florida. The Whitecaps previously signed Akron forward David Egbo, who they picked with the SuperDraft’s No. 9 selection.
“I’m excited to be officially a part of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC family and thankful to the club's executives, coaching staff and team for this opportunity,” Brown said in a release. “I look forward to coming in, working hard and helping Vancouver achieve success and contribute to its legacy.”
During his sole season of college soccer at the University of South Florida, Brown earned American Athletic Conference First Team All-Conference and All-Rookie Team honors in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, USF didn’t have their normal fall season in 2020.
Since making his Reggae Boyz debut in 2017, Brown has earned four caps at the senior level. He also spent two seasons with Jamaican Premier League side Harbour View FC, scoring once while starting 31 of 32 games.
Brown figures to give Vancouver depth at right back behind Jake Nerwinski, their starter each of the past four seasons. He’ll look to help the Whitecaps make the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017.
