Last week, we saw duelling panenkas, as Alejandro Pozuelo hit a filthy off-speed chip penalty kick to open his account for Toronto FC, followed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic getting in on the act with a panenka of his own for the LA Galaxy.
This week, we got an example of a panenka gone wrong.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC started their Week 6 match against the Galaxy brightly, as they earned a penalty in the first minute. But left back Ali Adnan, playing in his second MLS game and entering the league with a reputation as a dead ball specialist, could not replicate the exploits of Pozuelo and Ibrahimovic, as his attempt was so off-speed that it was easily stopped by Galaxy goalkeeper David Bingham.
It's the flip-side of the coin for panenkas: When they work, they look cool and full of swagger. When they don't? Well, they look pretty bad.
Maybe he was thrown off by that whistling from Zlatan Ibrahimovic?
