USMNT's Bobby Wood wins Bundesliga Goal of the Week in Hamburg debut

US national team forward Bobby Wood’s excellent start to his Bundesliga career got a little bit better on Thursday, when it was announced that his goal for Hamburg in their 1-1 draw against Ingolstadt last weekend won the German top flight’s Goal of the Week honors.

Wood scored in the 30th minute, running onto a Rene Adler goal kick and outmuscling an Ingolstadt defender before powering a 15-yarder inside the near post. Fellow US international Alfredo Morales started and played 81 minutes for Ingolstadt, who equalized in the 79th minute.

Wood, who moved to Hamburg from 2. Bundesliga club Union Berlin earlier this summer, took home a dominating 73 percent of the vote, beating out Bayern Munich’s Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski and Vfl Wolfsburg’s Daniel Didavi to win the season’s inaugural Goal of the Week award.

The 23-year-old forward is currently with the USMNT ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualifier at St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Tuesday’s qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago in Jacksonville, Florida.
