He’s been one of Chelsea’s best players since returning from injury, but there’s fresh concerns about Christian Pulisic after the US men’s national team star suffered calf tightness in the club’s FA Cup quarterfinal win over Leicester City Sunday.
Pulisic left the match in the 72nd minute of the 1-0 win and Chelsea coach Frank Lampard said the 21-year-old winger is questionable for the Blues’ midweek tilt against West Ham United.
“Christian Pulisic had a tightness in his calf when he came off at Leicester, which we're managing,” Lampard said in a Zoom press conference. “It feels better than it did, but we'll see tomorrow.”
Pulisic has scored twice, including a sensational solo goal against Manchester City, to help lead Chelsea to a perfect restart to their season following the COVID-19 suspension of play. It’s led Lampard to say Pulisic has the potential to be as good as superstar wingers Raheem Sterling, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
Pulisic was sidelined for nearly six months with an adductor injury. He returned to training in January, but suffered a setback. Pulisic, who participated in an in-house scrimmage in March, declared himself fit just before his return to England during the coronavirus pandemic stoppage.
USMNT teammate Matt Miazga, on loan at Reading from Chelsea, will also be sidelined, suspended for three matches following his scuffle with Derby County's Tom Lawrence after the final whistle of Reading's 2-1 English Championship defeat.
