Luis Gil has moved south for the next chapter of his career.
The US youth international signed with Liga MX club Queretaro on Wednesday, bringing the playmaker's six-year stint at Real Salt Lake to a close.
Gil, 22, scored 11 goals and nine assists in 134 games for RSL, including a career-best five goals and three helpers in 24 starts in 2013 as he helped the Utah club reach the MLS Cup and US Open Cup finals. But he struggled for consistent minutes in 2015, netting one goal and two assists in 16 starts as RSL's seven-year streak of playoff appearances came to an end, and he found himself out of contract at the end of the season.
Gil found his form in international play this year, however, playing a major role in the US U-23 national team's Olympic qualification campaign. Coach Andi Herzog's side finished in third place at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament and are set to meet Colombia in a two-legged playoff in March for one of the final spots at Rio 2016.
The Garden Grove, California product has been a regular for US youth national teams dating back to the U-17 level and has starred at the U-17 and U-20 World Cups.
The home of former US international Jonathan Bornstein, Queretaro finished in 11th place in the just-completed 2015 Liga MX Apertura campaign and reached the playoff final of the 2015 Apertura, where they fell to Santos Laguna.
