LA Galaxy attacker Uriel Antuna started and notched the first goal in Mexico's Concacaf Nations League-opening 5-1 win against host Bermuda on Friday.
The game, El Tri's first in CNL League A Group B play, took place in Bermuda's national stadium in Hamilton. Tata Martino, using a lineup mixed with experienced and newer internationals, played to a stalemate with the home side in the opening stretch. But Antuna found the breakthrough in the 25th minute, with a well-timed run to find Hirving Lozano's beautiful through ball, before slotting it past Bermuda goalkeeper Dale Eve.
J.J. Macias then scored a brace for Mexico, before Nakhi Wells opened Bermuda's account on the night with a beautiful strike off a low corner kick just before the hour mark. But Lozano scored a few minutes later, then missed a subsequent penalty, before Hector Herrera scored off a short free kick routine to make it 5-1.
Antuna, 22, has scored six goals this year for Mexico, his first year with the full national team. On loan at the Galaxy from Manchester City, Antuna had six goals and five assists in 29 MLS regular season appearances this season, and will look to extend LA's season when they take on Minnesota United FC in Round One of the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs Oct. 20 (8:30 pm ET | ESPN in US; TSN4, TVAS in Canada).
