After six international friendlies, the US men's national team face a first true test under Gregg Berhalter when what will no doubt be a heavily-scrutinized Gold Cup run begins against Guyana Tuesday night at Allianz Field.

The goal was Berhalter set out is to capture a seventh Gold Cup title, and second consecutive, in their 15th appearance, while Guyana is set to embark on their first Gold Cup journey.

In the first major international tournament since their failed 2018 FIFA World Cup bid, all eyes are on the USMNT under Berhalter's direction. Fair or not, the Gold Cup is viewed as the first step forward on the journey toward 2022 World Cup qualification.

Although Berhalter didn't field his strongest XI, the US are coming off consecutive defeats in Gold Cup tune-up matches. A 1-0 defeat to Jamaica at Audi Field was followed by a 3-0 loss to Venezuela at Nippert Stadium. Boos rained down after the final whistle in both matches, with the US lacking answers in the attack and punished for mistakes in the back. Can all be remedied with another trophy lift at the end of the Gold Cup?

Guyana

One of two Gold Cup debutants, along with Bermuda, Guyana had to wait until the final day of Concacaf Nations League qualification to clinch their spot. The Golden Jaguars defeated Belize, 2-1, with FC Cincinnati forward Emery Welshman scoring the decisive goal two minutes from halftime. Neil Danns opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Elroy Kuylen leveled for Belize.

Guyana, like the US, dropped both of their Gold Cup preparation matches, losing 1-0 to Bermuda at the Bermuda National Stadium on June 6 and falling to Haiti, 3-1, in Costa Rica on June 11. Meckack Jerome and Wilde-Donald Guerrier put Haiti in front, 2-0 before the half-hour mark and Jonel Desire added a third goal just past the hour mark before Keanu Marsh-Brown pulled Guyana a goal back in the 90th minute.
