After being mum about a long-rumored move to Europe, New York Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams broke his silence in an interview with Paul Tenorio of The Athletic, the 19-year-old claiming the time is getting nearer for him to head abroad.
Adams has risen up the ranks, becoming one of the top defensive midfielders in Major League Soccer and an integral part of the young core of the US men’s national team.
“I feel like at the end of the season, it will be the right time to go to Europe,” Adams said. “I’ve been in my comfort zone for this whole season … you have to step outside of it and really test yourself … all the stories of the best players in the world have something like that.”
The rumors of a move to Red Bull Leipzig intensified when former Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch joined the coaching staff midway through the MLS season.
“There’s a lot of discussion about Tyler,” Marsch said when he met reporters for the first time at Leipzig. “He’s a very gifted young player. I think Leipzig would be lucky to have him. But, there’s a lot of teams interested in him. We’ve fought hard in New York to hold onto him at least until the end of the year, but Tyler has a future in Europe, no doubt.”
Adams said he has unfinished business before leaving for Europe, wanting to lead the Red Bulls to their first MLS Cup title. To do so, though, New York will need a monumental, and historic, comeback, after losing 3-0 to Atlanta United in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Championship Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
