Toronto FC had already made a case as one of the best teams in Major League Soccer history prior to Saturday's 2017 MLS Cup, and following their 2-0 win over Seattle Sounders at BMO Field, they bolstered that case, and made bona fide history in the process.
The MLS Cup win, the club's first, clinched a domestic treble in 2017 for Toronto FC. They are the first team in MLS history, across 22 seasons, to accomplish this feat.
The treble began in June, when TFC defeated their biggest rival, Montreal Impact, 3-2 on aggregate in a two-legged final series for the 2017 Canadian Championship. Jozy Altidore scored in the first leg and Sebastian Giovinco notched a brace in the second leg to clinch the title, Toronto's 6th all-time in that competition.
The next trophy came in October, as TFC won the Supporters' Shield for the first time as MLS regular season champions, breaking the all-time record for points in a single MLS regular season and finishing 12 points ahead of the 2nd place finisher.
They capped off the treble with Saturday's win in MLS Cup, completing the feat that had eluded every other team previously. Altidore opened the scoring in the 67th minute, and Victor Vazquez tallied an insurance goal at the very end of second-half stoppage time to sew up the result.
Eight teams had previously captured a domestic double, but none had captured the trifecta of MLS Cup, Supporters' Shield and the domestic cup (Canadian Championship or US Open Cup) in a single season.
