The Montreal Impact are hoping to lift the Voyageurs Cup for the first time since 2014 when they take a 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg of the Canadian Championship final against rival Toronto FC Wednesday night at BMO Field.
In the opening leg at Stade Saputo on Sept. 18, Ignacio Piatti scored the lone goal in the 17th minute, a sensational 25-yard strike that was his tournament-leading fourth goal. If Toronto FC rally at home, they will claim a fourth straight title and record eighth overall.
The winner clinches Canada's lone berth in the 2020 Concacaf Champions League.
Toronto FC
Although Toronto FC had a nine-match unbeaten streak in all competitions snapped in the first leg, they are now eight matches without a loss in league play after a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC that clinched a berth in the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. Jozy Altidore set up Tsubasa Endoh's 19th-minute goal, which held up until Carlos Vela leveled from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.
Montreal Impact
The Impact suffered a third straight loss and have won just one of their last eight games following a 2-1 defeat to the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Complex Saturday night. Lassi Lappalainen leveled three minutes after the restart, canceling out Zlatan Ibrahimovic's first-half strike by latching onto Saphir Taider's ball served behind the Galaxy defense and heading past David Bingham from eight yards. But Uriel Antuna put the hosts in front for good two minutes later, capitalizing on a defensive miscue.
