TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Re-signed
Toronto FC have secured the future of one of their cornerstones on defense, announcing on Thursday they have re-signed Chris Mavinga to a multi-year contract extension.
The 26-year-old joined TFC ahead of the 2017 season from Russian side Rubin Kazan. The central defender played 34 games across all competitions, helping the Ontario outfit to a Canadian Championship-Supporters' Shield-MLS Cup treble, the first in club and MLS history.
“From the moment he joined Toronto FC, Chris has made a significant positive impact for our club and was an important figure in our success last season in winning the treble,” said Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a team statement. “We are pleased to extend his contract and ensure he will remain a part of our club as we open our title defenses this season.”
The Congolese international had previously been part of the Paris Saint-Germain youth set-up and was under contract at Liverpool FC before playing the bulk of his career in France, where he was born and raised.
Toronto FC are next in action on Tuesday in the CONCACAF Champions League against Tigres UANL in Monterrey (10 pm ET | UDN, go90.com).
