TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Retirement
Toronto FC defender Domenico Criscito has called it wraps on a 19-year career, formally announcing his retirement Tuesday.
The news comes roughly six months after the former Italian international's arrival from ex-Serie A side Genoa, when the 35-year-old joined countrymen Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi as part of TFC's midseason roster makeover.
The move necessitates Toronto finding a new starting left back, after Criscito featured in 16 all-competition matches for the Reds. He scored one goal that garnered him AT&T 5G MLS Goal of the Week honors against the New England Revolution in Week 26.
"Thank you very much, Toronto FC, for these six beautiful months,” Criscito said in a release.
“My family and I enjoyed our time in this incredible city, and we felt a part of this great family from day one. It is time for me to go home and evaluate what I will do for my future. Thank you and All For One."
Before joining Toronto FC, Criscito completed three stints with Genoa and served as the club captain since 2018. He also spent seven years with Russian top-flight club Zenit Saint Petersburg, winning three titles.
Altogether, Criscito scored 51 goals in 554 appearances across top European competitions.
“Mimmo had an exceptional career for club and country, and we are happy we had the chance to work with him the past six months,” said Toronto president Bill Manning. “During his time with us he has been a true professional on and off the pitch and we wish nothing but the best for him and his family.”
Criscito played in 26 games for Italy’s senior national team. He featured at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
“Mimmo came in and helped the team during a difficult stretch. He is an excellent player and a great person,” said Toronto head coach and sporting director Bob Bradley. “I enjoyed working with him this season and wish him well in the future.”
