A bit of Concacaf history was made on Sunday, as Liga MX powerhouse Tigres UANL advanced to the Club World Cup final with a 1-0 victory over Brazilian foe Palmeiras in the semifinal match between the sides in Qatar.
Tigres, as MLS fans might remember, beat LAFC 2-1 in the hotly contested one-off Concacaf Champions League final back in December to clinch the spot in the tournament afforded to the CCL winner. They also defeated New York City FC in the CCL quarterfinals by a 5-0 aggregate scoreline.
With Sunday's victory, Tigres become the first Concacaf team to ever advance to the Club World Cup final, where they'll take on the winner of Monday's match between Al Ahly and Bayern Munich.
Once again, it was star striker Andre Pierre-Gignac who came through in the decisive moment for Tigres, converting a penalty kick in the second half for the game's only goal. The Frenchman got the look from the spot after teammate Carlos González won the PK after drawing a foul after a smart run into the box.
There's still one more step for Tigres to finish the job, but Sunday's result ensures a milestone moment for Concacaf in its own right. The Club World Cup final is scheduled for Feb. 11.
