"Tata" Martino to make Atlanta return for Mexico friendly on June 5

Tata Martino - Atlanta United - Looks in the distance

The Mexican national team will be coming to play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the first time, and a familiar face will be returning to the venue and city.

Newly-hired El Tri manager Gerardo "Tata" Martino will bring his new side to MBS for a friendly on June 5, with the opponent to be named at a later date, according to an announcement from the FMF on Wednesday.

Martino, of course, led Atlanta United through their first two seasons, including the opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium during the 2017 season. He concluded his run with the club with the 2018 MLS Coach of the Year award and by winning the 2018 MLS Cup in front of an Atlanta home crowd.

While Mexico have played in Atlanta before, most recently in 2016, this will be their first time playing at Atlanta United's home stadium. The venue could already be a familiar one for a few El Tri players, as Martino indicated in his introductory press conference that the MLS-based trio of Giovani dos Santos, Jonathan dos Santos and Carlos Vela are all up for consideration in his selection.

The June friendly will help serve as a tune-up for the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, which will kick off with Mexico playing on the opening day, on June 15 at the Rose Bowl.
