Real Salt Lake haven't announced their end-of-the-season roster decisions yet, but one player has apparently beaten them to one announcement: Sunday "Sunny" Stephen said that the club has declined his contract option.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Sunny directed the club to decline his option because of a contract dispute that started before the 2017 season. When it was clear Sunny wasn't getting a pay raise, he wanted out.
“They don’t want me,” Sunny told the Salt Lake Tribune. “I cannot play where they don’t want me.”
He took to Twitter to announce the news.
Sunny, 30, made 59 appearances for RSL since joining in 2016. The midfielder made 23 appearances during the regular season and another two in the playoffs before the club was eliminated by Sporting Kansas City in the Conference Semifinals. He added that he hopes to stay in MLS.
“It all depends on what they offer me,” Sunny said. “I have a family. I have to think about them.”
