Luis Robles’ ironman streak is in danger of coming to an end this weekend.
Multiple sources have told MLSsoccer.com that the New York Red Bulls goalkeeper is dealing with a knee injury that could keep him out of Sunday’s contest at Atlanta (7 pm ET | FS1 in the US, TSN2 in Canada). The sources said that the team will determine at training on Saturday morning whether the 34-year-old will start against the Five Stripes.
Even if he does miss the game in Atlanta, the sources said that Robles isn’t expected to miss much time beyond this weekend.
Robles has appeared in New York’s last 183 regular season matches. He set the all-time MLS record for consecutive appearances last March, when he played in his 142nd straight regular season contest. He’s played every minute of every match during the streak, which dates back nearly six years to Sept. 29, 2012.
If Robles can’t play, Ryan Meara would be in line to start for New York. The 27-year-old started 18 games for the Red Bulls in 2012 but has only appeared in one league match since Robles’ streak began, starting one game while on loan from the Red Bulls to New York City FC in 2015.
