Stejskal: Houston's Juan David Cabezas returns to first team training

Juan David Cabezas - Mauro Manotas - Houston Dynamo - Sept. 15, 2018

He’s listed as out for Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Whitecaps, but Houston Dynamo midfielder Juan David Cabezas has returned to training with the first team and could conceivably be available for the club’s next match on March 30 at Colorado.

Cabezas suffered a thigh injury in the second-half of Houston’s Concacaf Champions League opener at Guatemalan club Guastatoya on Feb. 20. He’s missed all five of Houston’s subsequent matches in CCL and MLS play due to the injury.

A club spokesman told to MLSsoccer.com on Friday that Cabezas won’t play on Saturday, but he noted that the 28-year-old Colombian returned to training with the first team earlier this week. There’s no firm timetable for his return, but the club believes he’s getting close to coming back. Houston have a bye week following the Vancouver match to accommodate the FIFA international window.

The 2017 Dynamo team MVP, Cabezas missed all but six games due to an injury last season. Houston were a far different team without the holding midfielder, recording just 25 points in the 28 games he missed compared to 13 points in the six games he played.
