UPDATE: Citing multiple sources close to the situation, Sounder at Heart's Miki Turner reported late Tuesday that Bruin has suffered an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee. If his ACL is torn, Bruin would almost certainly be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Seattle Sounders striker Will Bruin sustained what appears to be a serious right leg injury during the team’s Tuesday training session, leaving the club and their fans are waiting anxiously for the prognosis.
“Will had to get carted off. I don't know the extent of the injury yet; I'll have to check in with the medical guys but certainly it's never good when you see a player carted off,” head coach Brian Schmetzer told reporters at his post-practice media availability. “We'll find out and we’ll give you guys and the players the information as soon as we have it.”
Bruin, 29, has been one of the Rave Green's more productive attackers since his arrival from the Houston Dynamo ahead of the 2017 season, scoring 20 goals and eight assists in 69 regular-season appearances for Seattle, as well as two goals and two assists during their 2017 run to the MLS Cup final.
He’s contributed two goals and an assist in nine league appearances (four starts) this year, working mainly as a reserve behind Designated Player Raul Ruidiaz – though Bruin was expected to figure prominently in the Sounders’ plans over the next few weeks with Ruidiaz away on Copa America duty with Peru.
“Will’s a tough kid. It was a fair play and the play, we have it up on film, the doctors will look at it,” said Schmetzer when asked about the circumstances of Bruin’s injury. “I was a little bit further away but you could tell it was serious just because the trainers were taking no chances. We’ll see what the diagnosis is.”
