ESPN revealed the list of nominees for the 2016 ESPYs on Thursday, and five MLS players and US women’s national team star Carli Lloyd are all up for awards.
Toronto FC attacker and 2015 Landon Donovan MLS MVP Sebastian Giovinco, Montreal Impact defender and 2015 MLS Defender of the Year Laurent Ciman, New York Red Bulls goalkeeper and 2015 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Luis Robles and New England Revolution striker Kei Kamara are the four nominees for Best MLS Player.
Seattle Sounders Homegrown and US national team striker Jordan Morris is also up for an award. The rookie is one of five nominees for Best Male College Athlete after winning the MAC Hermann Trophy and leading Stanford to their first men’s soccer national title in 2015.
Lloyd, the star of the USWNT’s World Cup winning campaign last summer, is one of four nominees in the Best Championship Performance category.
The midfielder is up for her performance in the Women’s World Cup final, in which she scored a hat trick in the opening 16 minutes – including a goal from midfield – to power the US to a 5-2 win against Japan. The first soccer player to ever be nominated for Best Championship Performance, Lloyd is up against LeBron James (NBA Finals), Sidney Crosby (Stanley Cup Playoffs) and Von Miller (Super Bowl).
The 2016 ESPYs will be hosted by John Cena and broadcast live on ABC at 8 pm ET on Wednesday, July 13.
Most ESPY winners will be determined by fan voting, with fans able to cast their vote online at ESPYS.com up until the start of the award show.
