TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Re-signed
The Seattle Sounders have re-signed defender Alex Roldan, the club announced Tuesday. The club confirmed Roldan will shift primarily to right back this season.
Roldan, 23, has made 28 appearances with the club since being selected in the first round of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft. He spent four seasons at Seattle University, where he made 82 starts during his time on campus.
“We’re excited to bring back Alex for another season in Seattle and see how he does at a new position,” Sounders GM and president of soccer Garth Lagerwey said in a club statement. “He has been a great pro these past two seasons, and his experience with our club will allow us to be flexible with him on the field.”
After spending his first two seasons as a midfielder, Roldan will offer depth at right back behind incumbent starter Kelvin Leerdam. The move keeps the Roldan brothers together for another season, with Alex's brother Cristian remaining a leading figure in the squad.
Seattle kick off their 2020 competitive schedule on Thursday against Olimpia in the Concacaf Champions League before their MLS season opener on March 1 against Chicago Fire FC.
