Is this the offseason Jordan Morris moves to Europe?
It remains to be seen, but it seems as real a possibility as it's ever been based on the Seattle Sounders winger's comments from US men's national team January camp on Monday.
Speaking to reporters on a video call, Morris reiterated the sentiment he expressed during the 2020 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs: That he's happy in Seattle, but would be interested in a move overseas if he felt it was the right team and opportunity, adding that the Sounders have at least had conversations with some potential suitors.
“Definitely some conversations are ongoing with Seattle and in Europe a little bit and I think that, for me, it's a similar stance of where I was before MLS Cup: If the right offer and the right team comes forward, it's something that I'd be interested in," Morris said. "If things don't work out and I end up in Seattle, I love being there and I feel like I'm growing a lot in Seattle. I think the league is growing, the quality of play is getting higher and I’ve felt myself develop there really, really well in my time in Seattle. But yeah, if the right opportunity came it’d definitely something that I would look at and we'll just have to wait and see.”
Morris' initial decision to sign with Seattle out of college has long been a polarizing topic among some USMNT fans who feel as though he could have accelerated his development in Europe. Morris has defended the decision, noting the unique opportunity to compete for championships with his hometown club, as well as pointing out the strides he's taken in his development while playing in MLS.
Still, the 26-year-old has accomplished plenty during his time in the league, winning a pair of MLS Cup titles and becoming one of the most dominant attackers in the league, so he couldn't be blamed for wanting to see what he can do overseas. It's a big offseason storyline to keep tabs on surrounding one of the league's brightest stars.
