Gustavo Bou felt trepidation as he waited for his paperwork to be finalized allowing him to join his new team. So, the newest New England Revolution signing did what a lot of others do when they feel stress — he went to a concert.
Not just any concert, the Rolling Stones at Gillette Stadium.
“I had never seen them, it was was something that surprised me,” Bou told Futbol MLS.
No doubt Bou felt plenty of satisfaction after opening his account Wednesday with a sensational volley, helping lead the Revs to a 4-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on his debut.
“I was very anxious the first week because I was waiting for the documentation to be able to play, but once that was resolved, I calmed down a lot,” he said.
Bou knows he’s a Designated Player, a player who established himself in Liga MX for Club Tijuana, but he believes he’s just one player on the roster, not the club’s Mick Jagger.
“I’m not coming with the idea that I’m a star,” Bou said. “I know that I have a name because of my time in Mexico, and because I know the Mexican league is watched a lot here. But I’ve been very relaxed and I took away the pressure so I could enjoy my debut.”
Helping the 29-year-old Argentine ease the beast of burden of coming to a new club has been a familiarity with how the Revs play. What is asked of him under coach Bruce Arena is the same as he was used to at Xolos.
“Bruce has emphasized his system to me,” Bou said. “He wants to use me in the same way I was playing in Mexico. Up front on the left, to look for the middle when he have possession and face towards the goal.”
