The San Jose Earthquakes will attempt to rebound from a slide that has them winless in their last four games and just one point above the playoff line in the Western Conference when they welcome the Vancouver Whitecaps to Avaya Stadium Saturday night.
The Quakes (11-10-5) suffered a third consecutive defeat Wednesday night, losing to LAFC, 4-0, at Banc of California Stadium as part of Heineken Rivalry Week. The hosts wasted no time, racing out to a two-goal lead on goals by Diego Rossi and Carlos Vela. Vela sliced through the San Jose defense for a stunning second goal in the 41st minute and Josh Perez put the finishing touches on the rout in the 81st minute. San Jose were without Matias Almeyda for most of the game, as the head coach was sent off during the first half, after he protested a non-call for a handball by LAFC defender Jordan Harvey.
The Whitecaps (6-12-9) picked up a second win in their last three games and have points in three of the last four following a 1-0 home win over D.C. United last Saturday. Yordy Reyna scored the only goal Vancouver would need in the 18th minute, a shot from 24 yards out across his body and through a handful of DC defenders, eluding the diving attempt of goalkeeper Bill Hamid.
This is the second meeting this season with the Quakes winning, 3-1, at BC Place July 20. Vako canceled out Doneil Henry's opening goal, Chris Wondolowski gave the visitors a 2-1 lead in the 34th minute and Magnus Ericksson added an insurance tally in the 79th minute.
