The San Jose Earthquakes have secured one of their main contributors, midfielder Anibal Godoy, on a new multi-year contract.
The news was announced on Thursday by the team. Godoy, 27, will remain with the team he joined in August 2015 and where he's established himself as a dominant presence in the Quakes' central midfield.
"Anibal has been a leader for our club on and off the field," said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli in a team statement. "He has a strong influence on every match he plays in and we made it a priority to sign him to a multi-year contract this offseason. We are happy he will be wearing a Quakes kit for years to come."
To date, since joining the Earthquakes Godoy has made 59 appearances in MLS regular season play, scoring five goals and three assists from a defensive-minded position. He also featured for the Quakes in their Knockout Round playoff game this season, after they qualified for the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs in dramatic fashion on the final day of the regular season.
Godoy is also a key member of Panama's national team, helping the country qualify for their first ever appearance at a World Cup tournament, when they'll take the field in Russia next summer. Godoy and Los Canaleros will learn their opponents for the World Cup group stage at tomorrow's draw in Moscow.
