The San Jose Earthquakes and defender Florian Jungwirth have agreed to a new multi-year contract, the club announced Thursday. Jungwirth was out of contract after the 2019 season.

Jungwirth, 30, joined the Quakes ahead of 2017 season and has been a constant in the starting XI, making 91 appearances (87 starts) over that time. He has been named the club's defensive player of the year in 2017 and 2019.

“Florian has been an integral part of our defense for the past three seasons,” Quakes GM Jesse Fioranelli said in a statement. “His experience and ability to direct our defensive line have proved invaluable to the team and we’re excited he’ll continue to fight for us in the coming years.”

Jungwirth returns to the Quakes two days after league legend Chris Wondolowski signed a new deal, as San Jose continue their offseason maneuvers after narrowly missing out on the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs.
