Having added a fourth Designated Player in returning attacker Simon Dawkins, the San Jose Earthquakes continued to solidify their 2016 roster on Thursday, announcing new contracts for defender Jordan Stewart, whose option was declined in December, and forward Quincy Amarikwa.
Stewart, 33, will be entering his fourth MLS season. He has been a regular starter for San Jose, mostly at left back, when healthy. He made 14 appearances in 2015 before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury.
“We are happy to bring Jordan back to the club,” Earthquakes general manager John Doyle said in a club statement. “He has been a great leader for the organization, both on and off the field, and we’re happy to have his veteran presence in the locker room for another season.”
Amarikwa, 28, is in his second stint with the Earthquakes after arriving midway through the 2015 season in a trade with Chicago. The UC Davis product scored six goals and added four assists in 17 starts for San Jose and should continue to be a big part of the Earthquakes attack in 2016.
“Quincy was a good addition to our team when we acquired him,” head coach Dominic Kinnear said in the club statement. “He quickly became an important part of the team and a piece that we wanted to keep as we head into 2016 and beyond.”
