The San Jose Earthquakes have acquired Eric Remedi from Atlanta United in exchange for $200,000 General Allocation Money, the clubs announced Monday. The deal could rise a further $300,000 GAM should certain performance-based incentives be met.

Remedi, 25, joined Atlanta during 2018 and made 59 MLS appearances with the club. The defensive midfielder saw his time increasingly limited as the 2020 season went on, starting just two of the club's final nine matches. Prior to San Jose landing him, it was reported Argentine clubs San Lorenzo and Independiente were looking to sign him.

“Eric is a player we’ve followed for many years and we’re excited he’ll now be representing San Jose in a key position of need,” Earthquakes GM Jesse Fioranelli said in a club statement. “His significant contributions with Atlanta have helped the team achieve success in a number of different competitions. Being able to structure a cap-friendly trade for a 25-year-old of his caliber with domestic success and three years of experience in Major League Soccer represented a unique opportunity for our club.”

Remedi adds another key option in central midfield for San Jose, where Jackson Yueill and Judson have been unquestioned starters under Matias Almeyda. He is more likely to play Judson's more defensive role than Yueill's.

The Argentine is San Jose's second major addition of the winter, following attacking midfielder Chofis Lopez from Chivas.

Remedi won MLS Cup, US Open Cup and Campeones Cup during his time with Atlanta. Remedi was acquired from Argentine side Banfield in 2018, the only club he'd played for prior to Atlanta. He made 60 appearances with Banfield.

“We want to thank Eric for his service to the club, helping us during our 2018 MLS Cup Championship and 2019 U.S. Open Cup Championship runs,” Atlanta VP & Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said. “We wish him the best of luck in San Jose and in his future.”
