TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
THURSDAY (6 PM ET): The Loons announced the move Thursday afternoon, confirming the previous reports. Miller signed a new contract through 2022, with a club option for 2023, with Minnesota.
“We think we’ve signed one of the best young goalkeepers in the league, who was invited to the (U.S.) national team last year,” said MNUFC head coach Adrian Heath in a statement. “We’ve spoken to all the people that have worked with him and they’re all incredibly complimentary. But more importantly, Stuart Kerr, who we believe is the best goalkeeping coach in the league, he thinks the upside is huge with this guy. We are delighted to get him. The fact that’s he’s American helps us with our international numbers. I think the best days of Tyler Miller are ahead of him and I couldn’t be more pleased that we’ve got him.”
THURSDAY (3:45 PM ET): Minnesota United have reportedly acquired the rights to goalkeeper Tyler Miller, sending $150,000 in General Allocation Money in 2020 and $50,000 in Targeted Allocation Money in 2021 to LAFC on Thursday.
Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune broke the story, with Paul Tenorio of The Athletic adding the terms.
Miller will likely be the Loons No. 1 goalkeeper after the club failed to agree to a new contract with Vito Mannone. There were also reported negotiations with former England International Joe Hart, but nothing materialized.
Miller was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2017 Expansion Draft and the 26-year-old started 61 regular season matches for LAFC over the course of two seasons. He was out of contract following the 2019 season.
When LAFC signed Dutch veteran goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer Wednesday, it became clear Miller wouldn’t return. And with Minnesota still needing to fill the void left by Mannone, the 2019 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, the club has seemingly pulled the trigger to obtain Miller’s rights.
