After spending most of the last year and a half on loan, Sam Adekugbe looks like he’s finally officially leaving the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Swedish outlet GP reported on Thursday that Swedish club IFK Goteborg is close to permanently acquiring Adekugbe from Vancouver. Adekugbe joined Goteborg on loan in July, making nine Allsvenskan appearances for the club down the stretch of the 2017 season.
Prior to joining Goteborg, Adkegube spent a year on loan with English club Brighton & Hove Albion as they earned promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.
The 22-year-old left back signed a Homegrown Player deal with the Whitecaps in 2013. He made 16 regular-season appearances and 10 starts before being loaned to Brighton in the summer of 2016. He has six caps for the Canadian men’s national team.
While it looks like Adekugbe is headed out, another Canadian defender could be on his way to Vancouver. Canadian journalist Anthony Totera reported on Wednesday that former Toronto FC Homegrown Doneil Henry, who was recently released by West Ham, could wind up with the Whitecaps.
Henry, 24, joined TFC as a Homegrown player in 2010, making 70 regular-season appearances for the club before joining West Ham in January 2015. He made just one appearance for the Premier League side, going out on several loans and receiving little playing time during his stint in Europe.
